Brief Description: Obsidian follows the story of a girl named Katy who moves to small town in the middle of nowhere in hopes of starting over. Things were looking pretty down until she met her neighbor, the extremely sexy, green-eyed boy named Daemon. He’s that most attractive person Katy’s ever seen, that is until he opens his mouth. Daemon is the definition of a jerk, infuriating, arrogant, stab-worthy. But Katy witnesses something about Daemon that leaves her marked and turns her into a glowing target for a galaxy full of enemies. Turns out, these guys with crazy abilities are coming to kill daemon and take his power, whatever that is. The only way Katy is surviving this, is if she sticks with the only person who can protect her, Daemon. That is, unless she kills him first.
Initial thoughts: I have heard FANTASTIC things about this book from booktubers (Polandbananasbooks and Abookutopia) and by just being in the book community. DON’T LET COVERS DECEIVE YOU, this book is absolutely fantastic, but the cover is super cheeseball. For the most part, all I knew of the book was hot aliens, fantastic dialogue, and writing that truly makes you LOL. I was super excited to read this book, even though I try not to become super hyped because I usually get disappointed in the end. In this case, that never happened and the book truly lived up to its expectations.
Characters:
Katy Swartz: Katy was such a great character who actually had a common sense and would make decisions that didn’t leave you wanting to throttle the book at a wall, with the exception of a specific scene (I’m still pissed). First of all, Katy’s quick wit and headstrong personality are great when she rubs the wrong way with people throughout the book. It makes her more real and relatable because she isn’t some heroin in a far off world, she starts out as normal as any other person. Also, she has an extreme love for books, which I was able to relate to, and she expresses her love through her blog with reviews, updates, hauls, and other book related videos.
Daemon Black: Daemon was great at times and made you want to run into his arms, but other times, he acted like a complete and utter jerk, making you want to knock him square in the face. His bipolar personality made it difficult to like him because one moment, he would be the sweetest thing in the world and made you forget about all the irritating things he had said, but then, a smirk would crawl on his face and the arrogance was back. Although, Daemon isn’t all that bad, he has an extreme and admirable protectiveness over his sister Dee. He may be a jerk most of the time, but he would do anything to protect the people he holds close to his heart.
Dee Black: Dee Black is a little firecracker, full of life and just wanting to have fun. She has a loyal personality and won’t turn her back on people in their time of need. She is the sister of Daemon and will do what is needed to protect the people she loves. She may be the only person with enough patience and care to deal with Daemon, but she loves him unconditionally.
*Light spoilers beyond this point, You have been warned!
Conflict:
The main conflict is the Arum are trying to suck the power and kill the Luxens, specifically, our beloved main characters Daemon, Katy, and Dee.
The other conflict is the slow burning passion between Daemon and Katy that they can’t act on. This leaves them both unsatisfied, hurt, and most of all confused.
Another conflict that appears is the struggle to accept Katy in the world of aliens and other galactic creatures.
Strengths: This book was absolutely FANTASTIC. From the world building to dialogue, this read was amazing and hit all the great qualities of a book on the head. Specifically, the book was written in a style that was easy to understand, relate to, and made it a fairly easy read. In addition, when it comes to the romance between Daemon and Katy, it was slow burning, which was a great change from other books where the characters suddenly fall in love. Overall, this book was one of those you look forward to reading because it was such a fun read.
Weaknesses: For the most part, there weren’t any significant mistakes and nothing specific took the focus away from the story. Although, there were a few part where the scenes were hard to imagine and the details only gave a vague image of what was happening.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romance. This book has a huge aspect of romance, but also focuses on the other conflicts and events happening outside of the romance. This books is also great for anyone expanding their genres into sci fi, it is a good transition for a person who mainly reads contemporaries.
If you like Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins, or the Iron King by Julie Kagawa, you’ll like Obsidian.
Overall thoughts: I absolutely love this book and if the rest of the series is just as good, it will most likely make it to my top five favorites. GO READ THIS BOOK! EndFragment
