I have gone through the first quarter of “Catcher in the Rye” and have been presented many different characteristics of Holden; including ways he interacts with people. Earlier Today, I watched a video reflecting on Holden’s character and the way he has conversations with people in the novel, conversations with himself, and separate conversations with the reader. It is interesting to see the difference in the way he thinks and talks with different characters and the reader.

In these next chapters, I got to learn more about Holden and his internal struggles. First of all, Holden’s sudden want to leave Pencey on bad terms leaves him in an emotional state with no one to comfort him. On his way out of Pencey on page 52, he says, “I was sort of crying. I don't know why.” this makes it seem like he doesn't know how to cope with loss, and may even relate back to his little brother, Allie’s, death. This also shows how he doesn’t have anyone to console him, which may reflect on his poor attitude and struggles through life.

Overall, I’m started to feel more compassionate towards Holden, but still believe that doesn’t make up for his poor attitude.

Will Holden be able to find someone to console him?

Will Holden be able to come to terms with his losses in life?

*Disclaimer - Holden's misunderstood and lonely
